Result Area (Extract from Financing Agreement):
Capacity of Growers Associations, the MRL Task Force and Emerging Farmers strengthened.
Activities planned for 2007 - Annual Work Plan 4 (AWP 4)
- The MRL Task Group will be visiting COLEACP and EU to strengthen the capacity to analyse, interpret and engage with EU pesticide legislation (SA PIP Study tour to Europe);
- Assistance to incorporate Emerging Farmers (EF) into existing Grower Associations (ongoing);
- Sponsorships for learners attending the technologist course (BTC) and mentor EFs;
- Training initiatives for EFWG members to learn from small-scale farmers in ACP country. (Emerging Farmer study tour to Kenya);
- Training for responsible pesticide handling to farmers and operators (ongoing).
Activities in 2006 (AWP 3)
- The MRL task group will be updated with various presentations from EU experts;
- A dossier compilation training will help building capacity within South Africa to correctly apply for Import Tolerances of pesticide residues in the EU;
- Ongoing registration of Emerging Farmers with export potential to extend the Emerging Farmer Data Base (EFDB);
- Integration of Emerging Farmers into existing Grower Associations;
- Training initiatives on a demand driven basis benefiting Emerging Farmers;
- Training for responsible pesticide handling to farmers and operators and
- Sponsorship for learners to successfully complete the one year technology program in agri-exports.
Activities in 2005 (AWP2)
- Hosting MRL Training Workshop in SA for representatives of the Fruit & Vegetable Industry to be facilitated by local and international experts to strengthen their capacity to analyse, interpret and engage with EU pesticide legislation;
- Continue the registration of Emerging Farmers with export potential to build a database;
- Assistance to build associations for Emerging Farmers and minor crops producers as a first step towards increased representation of Emerging Farmers and minor crop producers;
- Training initiatives on a demand driven basis (Initiative from Subtrop and other groups);
- Training project in co-operation with Crop Life International and Crop Life South Africa.
Activities in 2004 (AWP1)
- Study tour to Brussels with MRL Task force;
- Registration process of Emerging Farmers in South Africa;
- Info events to build Associations and inform stakeholders about SA PIP.
